    Thank you moto America, harley, Indian and mission and all the other sponsors for making king of baggers happen. Wasn't really paying attention to motorcycle racing until king of baggers and now I can't get enough of all the classes. Been to two races Atlanta and Road America in Wisconsin. Epic weekends.

      @@mikeskidmore6754 that's because even before Indian entered AFT they were looking to get away from purpose built race bikes (like the XR750), towards production based bikes. Then Polaris bought Indian, and approached AFT about fielding a bike. The problem was they didn't yet have a production engine that would be suitable, they only had the thunderstroke 111. Indian proposed a purpose built race bike/engine. AFT agreed with the gentlemen's agreement that after 3 seasons Indian would retire the FTR750, and field a production based bike/engine. That didn't happen, and Indian built enough FTR750s and sold them, so now they make up a majority of the field. Now AFT is in a tough spot as HD pulled out after several seasons of trying to make their production based XG750R competitive against the FTR750. Yamaha/ Estensen Racing were about to do the same at the end of last season. They were expecting AFT/ Indian to live up to the 3 season agreement, and as such have been refining their production bikes for that direction. So AFT, faced with the major loss of a factory team, and being about to lose the only other team with factory support; finally decided to start reigning in the FTR750.
      Here is a write up on the whole debacle, though it's a 3 part article posted in reverse order. So you'll have to scroll down to part 1 as part 3 is at the top. It's a really interesting read as to what got us here, and why the other bikes are struggling to compete with the Indian.

    • @usmcvet0313
      @usmcvet0313 2 года назад +2

      @@mikeskidmore6754 you won't hear me argue against the fact that the AMA has done stupid stuff in the past in flat track. However, that doesn't have any bearing on what they're trying to do currently. In the article I sent you they present the point of view of 3 sides: the AFT, non Indian riders/teams, and finally the Indian riders/teams. Bryan Smith is a key player in all of this. As you said about the Kawi 650s winning the miles before Indian came, Bryan Smith was the last rider to win the championship on something besides an Indian, and it was on a Kawi. Smith was called, and went to testify before the AFT officals at the close of last season. As I'm sure you know, he was one of the original factory Indian riders. Then he left the team with the expressed purpose of building a bike that could beat the Indians. He was unsuccessful, and he details why. That V&H head, and dual throttle bodies wouldn't help the XG750R. It isn't an issue of power that is keeping the other bikes from winning, the FTR750 is not the most powerful bike on the track. Smith goes into the physics of why he wasn't able to make another bike compete with the Indian. The problem he said is "moment of inertia", which in layman's terms means that the FTR was designed with a massive crankshaft that makes it rev more slowly. This allows it to put the power to the ground without breaking traction better than the production engines. The corners are where Indian really pulls away from the other bikes. They can put power down throughout the corner, which then gives them a good drive down the straight. With the Kawi, Yamaha, & HDs; it is much more difficult as they break the rear wheel loose much easier. If that happens, it ruins their line and costs them time. The production engines can't house a crank as big as the Indian's. AFT said they have tried for the past few years to incentivize the other manufacturers to make engines that could compete with the Indian. The problem is the characteristics that make a really good flat track race engine aren't good for anything else. They're not good for road racing, or street riding. Thus the other manufacturers aren't interested in sinking millions into engines they can only use in flat track, the return on investment isn't there. AFT does not want to return to the XR750 days where there is an entire field of just one bike. So after HD left, and Yamaha was about to do the same, they decided the only option was to restrict the Indian.

    Indian is forcing HD to learn how to build proper race bikes again, this will trickle down to the commercial products. Indian currently has Brembo, Fox Shocks and inverted forks on most models. Out of the gate, this is a massive leap in consumer performance products, and I hope HD soon adapts a performance mindset, which we all love.
